Separate by textile family, soil type, colour and approved process; keep kitchen and cleaning articles out of guest table linen.

## Check washing, rinsing and drying

Softener or an anti-static product is not a universal correction. It may reduce static attraction in one process, but it can also change wetting, hand, stain release or finishing. ## Commission new napkins before service

New textile goods can release loose surface fibre during their first washes. Send new napkins through the intended, clean laundry and finishing route before they reach a guest, then inspect and test them. This also removes production and packing residues and reveals early dimensional, colour, seam or finish problems while the lot can still be contained.

There is no universal number of commissioning washes. Use enough controlled processing to reach the restaurant’s agreed condition without concealing persistent shedding. Record each cycle and compare transfer. A steep improvement may indicate initial loose fibre; little or no improvement suggests that repeated washing is not an acceptance plan. The supplier and restaurant should agree the commissioning route and pass point before a large delivery.

## Specify a low-lint surface, not just a fibre label

Cotton and polyester can both be involved in a lint complaint. Cotton staple fibre can be visibly light against dark clothing; staple-spun polyester can fuzz or pill, while a smooth synthetic napkin can attract foreign lint through static. The fibre percentage therefore cannot promise a low-transfer napkin by itself.

Ask how the complete surface is built. Fibre length and quality, yarn twist and hairiness, spun or filament yarn, weave, fabric density, singeing and other finishing, dyeing, edges and laundering all matter. Combing removes short fibres before spinning; sufficient twist helps hold staple fibres together; compact spinning can produce a smoother, less hairy yarn; singeing removes protruding fibre from the fabric surface. Each can support a cleaner surface, but only the finished napkin and its processed performance can be accepted.

Laboratory pilling methods such as the ISO 12945 series can compare a fabric’s propensity to pilling, fuzzing or matting. They are useful supplier-screening evidence when the exact method, specimen preparation and grading are declared. ## Run a controlled transfer test

Create a small, repeatable operational check using full-size napkins after the intended commissioning and laundry route. Use clean dark and light reference fabrics representative of clothing surfaces the restaurant commonly encounters. Keep the contact area, number and direction of strokes, folding sequence, pressure, dry or damp condition, lighting and photography consistent. Include an approved reference napkin whenever possible.

## Set a rejection and replacement rule
