# How Many Sets of Bed Linen Does a Charter Yacht Need?

Begin by testing three complete sets for every guest bed in its approved configuration: one dressed, one moving through laundry and one clean reserve. Increase the affected references when changes can outpace clean returns; do not reduce the number until a measured onboard or shore-laundry route proves that service can continue without borrowing or emergency washing.

Three complete bed-linen sets for each active guest-bed configuration is a useful first planning scenario for a charter yacht. In simple terms, one set can be on the bed, one can be unavailable in collection, washing, drying or finishing, and one can remain clean for a change, stain or delayed return. This is often called three par.

Three par is a circulation model, not an industry law. A reliable same-day onboard route with no additional full change before clean stock returns may technically circulate fewer pieces, but two sets leave no separate reserve. A yacht using shore laundry, running back-to-back charters, changing linen more frequently or carrying several non-interchangeable cabin sizes may need four or more sets of particular references. Calculate those references rather than applying one multiplier to the vessel.

## Use three par as a starting scenario

The value of three par is that it makes the stock states visible: dressed, processing and ready. If every set is merely described as “spare”, the same piece can be counted in a locker, in a laundry bag and in a purchasing schedule. Give each state a real quantity and test whether the processing set returns before the ready set is required.

Do not assume that more stock automatically creates resilience. Extra sets consume valuable stowage, can age unevenly and may conceal missing pieces. The purpose of the starting scenario is to expose the real constraint, then adjust the affected product lines with evidence.

## Define what one complete set contains

Write the contents of a made-bed set for every cabin. Depending on the approved presentation, it may include a fitted or flat bottom sheet, a top sheet, a duvet cover and a stated number and style of pillowcases. Record pillow size, Oxford or plain style, decorative border, monogram position and colour where these make pieces non-interchangeable.

Keep items with different change rules separate. Mattress and pillow protectors, toppers, blankets, decorative cushions, throws and bed runners may belong to the cabin programme without forming part of every routine linen change. Calling all of them one set either inflates the order or leaves fast-moving sheets and pillowcases short.

- Give every component an exact product code, processed dimension and cabin assignment.
- State the number of pillowcases and any top-sheet or duvet-cover option in the normal presentation.
- List protectors, toppers and decorative pieces on separate change and reserve rules.
- Record which components are genuinely interchangeable between cabins.
- Pack and label cabin sets only after the component-level quantities are sufficient.

## Count every berth configuration that can be active

Maximum guest count is not a bed-linen schedule. Eight guests might occupy four double beds, eight single berths or a mixture of fixed, Pullman and convertible arrangements. Count the maximum approved configuration by cabin and identify every mattress or berth that can be dressed at the same time.

Convertible twin-to-double cabins need special attention. The two layouts may share pillowcases yet require different bottom sheets, toppers, joiners, duvets or covers. Stock the configuration promised for the charter programme and define how many cabins can convert simultaneously. Do not count a double conversion kit as a spare for two single fitted sheets unless it physically performs that job.

## Measure the complete laundry return

Laundry turnaround starts when a used piece leaves clean availability and ends when it is washed, dried, finished, inspected, folded, returned aboard if necessary and stowed for issue. The washer programme alone is not the return time. Sorting, stain treatment, machine queues, drying, pressing, transport, marina access and final quality checks can all extend the window.

Measure the route during a realistic charter period. Onboard machines also process guest clothing, towels, table linen, galley textiles and crew laundry, so nominal machine capacity is not the same as bed-linen capacity at the moment it is needed. Shore laundry adds collection times, cut-offs and delivery reliability. Record the slow credible route, not only the fastest successful cycle.

Then count the full bed changes that can occur before the first stripped set is available again. Include departure reset, any scheduled changes during the charter and credible unscheduled changes. Do not count the original dressed bed twice: it is the in-use quantity, while only later replacement events add circulation demand.

## Calculate each exact reference separately

For each product code, add four quantities: pieces in use at the maximum configuration; replacement pieces required before the first used pieces return; pieces temporarily unavailable because they are stained, under review, missing or being repaired; and a reserve tied to a named disruption. The result is the required stock for that reference.

A set-level total is useful for budget and stowage, but procurement should retain the component schedule. Pillowcases often move at a different rate from duvet covers; a damaged fitted sheet does not remove every other component of its former set. Replacing only complete packs can create excess in slow-moving lines while the actual shortage remains.

## Work through a four-cabin example

Imagine a charter yacht with one owner double cabin, one VIP double cabin and two twin cabins with two berths each. In its normal guest-ready configuration, four cabin packs dress six beds. A simple three-par scenario produces twelve cabin packs: three for the owner cabin, three for the VIP and three two-berth packs for each twin cabin. Expressed as individual made-bed sets, that is eighteen sets—three owner-double, three VIP-double and twelve single-berth sets.

These numbers demonstrate the method; they are not a recommendation for every four-cabin yacht. If the two twin cabins can convert to doubles, add the conversion-specific components needed for the maximum simultaneous double layout, then apply their own circulation and reserve calculation. ## Build the reserve around named events

A useful reserve has a job. It might cover one heavily stained owner-cabin bottom sheet, a missed shore-laundry delivery, one unscheduled full change during a passage, or the first charter after a new cabin configuration is introduced. Identify the references and duration affected, then add the pieces that event consumes.

Avoid a blanket percentage that creates fractions of unique custom sets or assumes every cabin has the same exposure. One additional universal pillowcase reference may support several cabins; one extra shaped fitted sheet may support only a single berth. Review actual reserve use after the season and move the allowance where incidents show it is needed.

## Separate guest, owner and crew programmes

Owner, charter guest and crew linen can have different materials, markings, service standards, sizes and change frequencies. Calculate each programme separately even if the purchasing summary later combines them. Guest stock assigned to an irregular berth is not a dependable emergency substitute for crew bedding, and borrowing owner linen can disrupt the approved presentation.

Crew beds remain occupied across guest turnarounds and follow the vessel’s crew-change and laundry routine rather than the charter arrival schedule. Include them in the total onboard stowage and laundry workload, but do not let a combined vessel-wide “sets per berth” number hide the different circulation windows.

## Make the stock usable on board

Count clean, serviceable and accessible stock—not everything the yacht owns. A set in shore storage, sealed for a future owner visit, awaiting repair, missing a pillowcase or carrying a storage odour cannot meet tonight’s cabin change. Inventory by location and condition, and define who releases a processed set back into clean availability.

Use cabin, berth, orientation, size and configuration labels that remain legible through the approved care process. Fold or package pieces so crew can retrieve one complete change without unpacking several cabins. Keep clean, used and quarantined linen physically separate, and align the quantity with the dry, ventilated stowage actually available.

## Verify the model during a real turnaround

Before fixing the order, follow every relevant reference through a representative charter and changeover. Record what was dressed, stripped, reissued, held for stains, sent ashore, returned late or borrowed between cabins. - Confirm every cabin and berth configuration that may be active simultaneously.
- Approve the exact contents and processed fit of each bed-linen set.

Three par remains a clear first scenario because it separates the dressed set, the processing set and the clean reserve.
