Ring-Spun vs Open-End Cotton Towels for Hotels

Ring-spun and open-end yarns have different structures, but the better hotel towel is the complete construction that passes the property’s care and use trial.

Ring-spun yarn is usually chosen when a hotel wants a finer, smoother or softer cotton towel, while open-end yarn can support a more economical and consistent construction. That is a starting distinction, not a purchase decision. Spinning method changes the yarn structure; it does not fix the towel’s GSM, pile density, twist, ground, border, finish or sewing.

Compare finished towels made for the same intended use. If one sample changes weight, size and finish as well as yarn system, you cannot credit the result to ring or open-end spinning alone. Ask the supplier to state where each yarn is used, because a towel can combine different yarns in its pile, ground and borders.

How the two yarn systems differ

Ring spinning drafts a prepared strand and inserts twist as the yarn is wound onto a small package, followed by a separate winding stage. Open-end, also called rotor spinning, separates fibres and collects them in a rotating rotor to form yarn continuously. The different paths create different fibre arrangements and production rates.

CottonWorks describes ring spinning as the benchmark for fine counts and soft hand, while rotor spinning uses fewer stages and runs at higher production rates. These are general yarn tendencies. The cotton fibre, yarn count, twist, preparation and final towel construction still change the result.

These are tendencies, not guarantees for every finished towel.

Softness is not only the spinning system

Pile height, twist, finishing and laundering can make a larger difference to the hand a guest notices. A low-twist pile may feel open and soft, while a higher twist may feel firmer. Applied finishes can also make a new sample feel different from the same towel after several processes.

Judge softness after the intended care route and without knowing which sample is which where practical. Ask several people to compare the same conditioned pieces. Record whether the preference remains after drying, folding and room storage rather than relying on the first unwashed sample.

Strength claims need a defined method

Published yarn guidance commonly describes ring-spun yarn as stronger than comparable open-end yarn, but that does not prove that every ring-spun towel will outlast every open-end towel. Yarn count, twist, fibre preparation, ply, ground density and sewing may change which part fails first.

If strength matters to the brief, request a stated test method and results for the offered construction. Review breaking or tearing evidence only where the method suits the material and the failure risk. Then inspect the processed full-size towel for pulled loops, thinning, border distortion and hem damage.

Compare like with like in the quotation

  • Confirm composition and any cotton claim.
  • State yarn system by pile, ground and border where available.
  • Align finished dimensions, GSM basis and tolerances.
  • Record pile type, yarn count or twist details that the supplier declares.
  • Align borders, hems, labels, colour and finish.
  • Use the same sample process and evaluation method.

A lower open-end quotation may be entirely suitable if the completed towel meets the hotel’s hand, appearance, processing and durability requirements. Paying more for ring-spun yarn is justified only when its actual result matters to the service and survives the trial.

Run one coded, processed trial

Code several towels from each option, retain unused controls and process the trial pieces together only when their care requirements allow it. Record the load and finishing conditions. Compare finished size, piece weight, wetting, hand, lint, loops, borders, hems, folding and drying behaviour.

Do not announce a universal winner. If ring-spun produces a preferred hand but the open-end option behaves better in the hotel’s folding system, the decision is a real trade-off. Write down which result is mandatory, which is preferred and what price difference the hotel is accepting.

Use the yarn name as one line in the specification

Once approved, keep the spinning declaration with the finished towel specification and treated sample. A future quotation that says “ring-spun” or “open-end” is not automatically equivalent. It must still match the agreed construction, dimensions, tolerances and test result.

Use the full towel durability guide for pile, ground and sewing checks, then compare candidate pieces in the hotel bath-towels family and Stay category.
