Why Do New Hotel Towels Shed So Much Lint?
Commission new towels as a separate, coded batch before room use. Track lint through repeated representative wash-and-dry cycles, compare it per towel, and investigate when the trend stays high, rises or comes with thinning, fuzzing, broken yarns or loop damage.

New cotton terry can release a noticeable amount of lint during its first wash-and-dry cycles. The pile presents a large fibre surface, and laundering dislodges loose fibre ends and fragments left at that surface after manufacture and finishing. This early release is not automatically evidence of a defective towel.
The word “new”, however, should not excuse unlimited shedding. A commissioning batch should show a clear downward trend without visible thinning, bare ground, broken yarns or damaged hems. If lint remains heavy, increases, transfers to guests or other linen, or appears with surface damage, hold the batch and investigate the towel and the laundry process separately.
Some first-cycle lint can be normal
A terry towel is not a flat, sealed surface. Its pile yarns form thousands of loops, greatly increasing the exposed fibre area. Cotton yarn itself is made from finite staple fibres rather than one continuous filament. Manufacturing, handling and finishing can leave weakly held fibres at the surface, and the mechanical action of washing and tumble drying makes them visible in the lint collector.
That explains an initial pulse; it does not define an acceptable quantity or duration. Towel construction, fibre preparation, yarn, pile, finish and the laundering route all change the result. A supplier’s “low lint”, “combed”, “ring-spun”, “low twist” or “premium” description is useful specification context, but none of those words alone proves how a finished towel will behave in the hotel’s washer and dryer.
Identify what is actually shedding
“Lint” is often used for several different defects. Empty the dryer collector for inspection, but also open dry towels in good light and inspect the guest-facing surface, borders, hems and labels. A filter full of short loose fibres is different from long pulled loops, small pills attached to the face, edge thread, or pale fibre transferred from another item in the load.

Keep photographs and physical examples of each pattern. If all loose material is combined as “towel lint”, the investigation can wrongly blame the new pile for a snagging point, mixed load, failing hem or contaminated dryer.
Separate product causes from laundry causes
The towel determines how fibres are held. Relevant variables include fibre length distribution and preparation, yarn size and twist, spinning system, ply, pile height and density, the relationship between pile and ground, shearing or other surface finishing, and the security of borders and hems. Combing, for example, removes shorter fibres during yarn preparation; additional yarn twist generally changes strength, softness, absorbency and surface behaviour. These are interacting variables, not a ranking in which one label always wins.
The process determines how hard that construction is worked. Load size and composition, wash action, water and chemistry, extraction, tumbler action, drying temperature and endpoint, cool-down and handling can all affect abrasion or expose a weakness. Overdrying should be treated as a process fault, but simply choosing the gentlest possible cycle is not the answer either: the towel still has to be washed hygienically and dried completely under a validated programme.
Compare like with like. If the new sample has a different GSM, pile, yarn, finish, size and colour from the incumbent towel, the lint result cannot be credited to “ring-spun” or “low twist” alone. Likewise, if two batches were processed in different load sizes or dryers, the result does not isolate product quality.
Commission new towels as a controlled batch
Do not send an unprocessed delivery straight to rooms. Select coded samples across cartons or production packs and retain unused controls. Inspect and record new dimensions, piece mass, appearance, pile, borders, hems and labels. Confirm care information and the proposed hotel formula with the supplier, laundry, chemical and equipment teams before the first cycle.
Process the samples as a towel-only batch, separated by colour and specification. Keep abrasive closures, cleaning textiles and unrelated goods out. Use a representative machine and documented load rather than a few towels tumbling alone unless the agreed test method requires that setup. Clean and inspect the lint collector before the run so the observation belongs to this batch.
- Code the delivery, sampled cartons, individual test pieces and retained unused controls.
- Record the towel specification, new appearance, dimensions and consistently conditioned piece mass.
- Confirm the care label and intended wash, extraction, drying and cool-down route.
- Keep the test load limited to the same towel colour and construction, with documented ballast only if the agreed method calls for it.
- Start with clean equipment, carts and lint collectors, and record the previous equipment use where relevant.
- After each complete cycle, record lint, surface condition, loops, borders, hems, hand, absorbency and dimensions.
- Evaluate towels fully dry and cool before deciding whether they are ready for room use.
Judge whether shedding is falling
The key evidence is a comparable trend, not one dramatic photograph of a full lint screen. Record the number and dry mass of towels in every cycle, because twice as many towels can produce more total lint even when release per piece is lower. Photograph the collector against the same scale or, where the procedure is controlled, collect and weigh the dry lint. Use the same equipment, loading, conditioning and measurement method throughout.
Towel mass is sensitive to moisture, so a casual before-and-after weight taken in different room conditions is not a laboratory shedding result. Formal methods condition specimens and specify washing, drying or abrasion procedures. For operational commissioning, consistency supports a useful trend; when a contractual limit or dispute is involved, use the exact agreed standard and a competent laboratory.

There is no universal number of hotel wash cycles or single lint percentage that makes every towel acceptable. The buyer and supplier should agree the method, number of cycles, calculation basis, limit and accompanying appearance checks for the offered construction. Changing any of those after a failure makes the comparison unreliable.
Investigate persistent or heavy lint
When shedding does not stabilise, quarantine the affected delivery and preserve the evidence. Confirm whether the pattern follows a carton, colour, size, production lot, washer, dryer, programme, shift or date. Compare the new towel with an unused retained control and with an approved incumbent processed through the same route where their care requirements permit.
Ask the supplier for the complete finished-towel specification and its own shedding or wash-test method and results, not only a fibre name or quality adjective. Ask the laundry team for actual load, programme, dosing, temperatures, extraction, drying time and endpoint, plus equipment condition. A textile laboratory can then test representative pieces when the cause or contractual responsibility remains unclear.
Do not keep cycling the whole delivery in the hope that it will eventually stop. Every extra wash and dry changes the evidence, consumes capacity and removes some material. Define a hold point and an escalation point before the trial begins.
Protect the laundry and room standard
A lint-heavy commissioning run adds an equipment and housekeeping burden. Follow the dryer manufacturer’s instructions for inspecting and cleaning filters and airways, and never run equipment with a missing, damaged or clogged lint filter. If a new batch fills collectors unusually quickly, pause at the safe interval defined for the machine rather than treating the normal cleaning schedule as sufficient.
Keep new commissioning loads away from sheets, uniforms and established room-ready towels so loose fibres do not transfer and confuse the result. Clean carts, sorting surfaces and folding equipment before the processed samples move forward. Housekeeping should check a dry towel on skin, dark clothing and bathroom surfaces before the first guest issue, then report the towel code rather than quietly rewashing or replacing individual pieces.
A towel can pass a lint trend and still fail the room. Confirm absorbency, hand, odour, colour, finished size, fold, visual density, loops, borders and hems. Hygiene validation remains a separate obligation: low lint is not evidence of a hygienic wash, just as a hygienic process does not excuse fibre transfer to the guest.
Turn the result into a purchase standard
Towel standards can cover new-product characteristics for household and institutional use, and dedicated methods also exist for measuring towel fibre shedding by washing mass loss or abrasion. Referencing a standard name without the required edition, method, preparation, cycles and acceptance value is incomplete. The hotel should state which method applies and agree any limit with the supplier before production.
Keep the approved processed sample beside the written specification. Record composition, yarn declarations, pile and ground construction, GSM basis, finished dimensions and tolerances, colour, borders, hems, labels, care route, commissioning method, lint acceptance and the other properties checked at approval. A later delivery using the same marketing words is not automatically equivalent.
The best result is not “zero visible lint after one wash”. It is a towel that reaches a stable, agreed shedding level through a realistic commissioning route and then continues to meet the hotel’s guest, laundry and replacement standard. That is measurable, repeatable and far more useful than deciding that every new towel sheds—or that no good towel ever should.
